One of the most frequently asked questions we see in our Turo Hosts – Tips & Tricks Facebook group is “What kind of insurance do I need for my Turo car?”
It’s a great question—and the answer is crucial to the long-term success and protection of your Turo business.
First, Understand Turo’s Coverage
Turo does offer protection plans for hosts, but they only kick in under certain conditions. Here’s what you need to know:
Turo's coverage only applies during an active trip. That means from the moment a guest checks in to the moment they check out.
During delivery at check-in, Turo provides third-party liability coverage—this protects you if you injure someone or damage another car while delivering your vehicle.
However, this delivery coverage does not apply to your own car. If you're in an accident while dropping the car off, and it's not yet checked in, your vehicle is not protected.
Once the trip is over, Turo’s insurance no longer applies—you're on your own.
This is why off-rent insurance coverage is a must for every host. It covers your vehicle during all the non-rental times: transporting, staging, cleaning, maintenance, and storage.
Why Personal Insurance Doesn’t Work
Many new hosts think, “I’ll just keep my regular auto insurance and use that when the car isn’t on a trip.” Unfortunately, it’s not that simple.
Most personal auto insurance policies do not cover commercial use, and Turo is considered commercial activity.
So, if your vehicle is damaged or stolen while it’s off-rent and your insurer finds out you’re renting on Turo, they can:
Deny your claim
Cancel your policy
That leaves you completely vulnerable, with no recourse.
Recommended Off-Rent Insurance Providers
To stay protected, you'll need a commercial policy or specialized coverage for peer-to-peer rentals. The three most recommended providers in the host community are:
ABI (American Business Insurance)
GMI Insurance
Tint
Each has its pros and cons, and some are better suited for single-car hosts while others cater to larger fleets. We recommend you do research and find which company works best for you.
What to Consider When Choosing Insurance
Choosing the right insurance depends on your setup:
Are you a solo host with one car?
Do you have a growing fleet and employees?
Are you delivering vehicles across multiple cities?
Each scenario calls for a different level of protection. When shopping around, compare:
Coverage for damage, theft, and liability
Whether trailers or transport are covered
Monthly premiums vs. per-vehicle pricing
Claim processes and ease of communication
Your insurance should grow with your business, not limit it.
