If you’re renting out your vehicle on Turo—whether you’re just getting started, already managing a few cars, or have a full-blown fleet—encountering a smoking violation can be a real headache.
We’ve seen this pop up more times than we can count, and while it’s never fun to deal with, it is something you can handle smoothly if you know what steps to take. Let’s break it down.
What Counts as a Smoking Violation?
According to Turo’s Terms of Service, guests are not allowed to smoke anything in your vehicle. That includes:
Cigarettes
Marijuana
Vapes/e-cigarettes
Pipes or cigars
If you find evidence that a guest has smoked in your car, you’re eligible to request a $150 smoking violation fee—but only if you follow Turo’s process and submit the claim correctly and on time.
What Turo Requires (and When)
To file a smoking violation, Turo requires:
Photos showing evidence (ash, residue, burns, etc.)
A clear description of the issue
Submission within 24 hours of the trip ending
You’ll submit this through the "Reimbursement" section in the Turo app or website. And yes—it must be submitted quickly. If you're late, your request could be denied, even with solid evidence.
Our Tips for Hosts (New or Experienced)
Take photos before every trip and right after the return—this keeps your records strong. This includes under the seats, and getting close ups of the interior of the vehicle. Taking your time with check-in photos can pay off in the long run. Don't rush this process - Ever.
Prep your vehicle with a no-smoking reminder sticker—some hosts leave a simple laminated notice in the cupholder or glove box.
Turn your AC and heat on after a trip. Smoke lingers. If you smell it, check for visual signs and take pictures immediately. Don't forget to check cracks in seats, under seats, and windows for ash marks.
Communicate professionally. Message the guest through the app if you suspect a violation, but always keep things courteous and clear.
How to Remove the Smoke Smell From Your Car
Removing smoke odor can be difficult —but it is possible. Here are the top methods hosts in our community recommend:
Use the Spiffy Smoke Tumbler
Turo has partnered with Spiffy to offer a Smoke & Odor Removal Tumbler. It’s designed specifically for car interiors and can neutralize tough smoke odors quickly. It’s portable, easy to use, and highly rated by hosts who want a mess-free solution. You can learn more about the Spiffy product on your Turo host dashboard under recommended products.
Run an Ozone Machine
An ozone generator is another highly effective solution. These machines break down odor-causing molecules at the source. To use:
Place the ozone machine in your vehicle
Close all windows and doors
Let it run for 30–60 minutes (no people or pets in the car during use)
Ventilate the car afterward for at least 30 minutes
Wipe Down All Surfaces
Smoke clings to everything—so clean thoroughly:
Wipe all windows and mirrors with glass cleaner
Scrub the dashboard, door panels, vents, cupholders, and console
Use a mild upholstery cleaner on cloth seats or a leather-safe cleaner on leather
Don’t forget the headliner—smoke rises and often gets trapped in the fabric on the ceiling of your car.
Replace or Deep Clean Cabin Air Filter
If your vehicle has a cabin air filter, it can trap smoke particles and continue to circulate that smell. Either:
Replace the filter
Or clean it if reusable. We highly recommend investing in a reusable Cabin Air Filter as smoking violations are a common occurrence on Turo.
Use Activated Charcoal or Baking Soda
Leave an open box of baking soda or a pouch of activated charcoal in the car overnight. These absorb lingering odors over time and are great for follow-up maintenance.
